If you are represented by a company like Ford or Elite - they are not going to be expecting you to pay for these things if you have true potential. Some agencies will convince you to work with their "people" - photographers and make-up artists to get a portfolio - which will cost you - and then you won't get work. Business is business - if the agency is willing to take a chance on you and pay for these up front costs - you will likely end up paying higher commission but you should be working all the time - this makes you like an employee of the agency. Modelling is a job - and if you apply to any other job and they see something in you. They train you generally on the job - and you aren't showing up to work for a week paying them to train you - no you are getting paid. Trust me - the one thing you want to avoid is any agency who tells you to drop like $500-$700 on a talent course in the first meeting. |
| EUPHORIATALENT [ 3/5/2008 3:07:45 PM ] : I am an agent in the NE of the US. I have seen quite a few people lately who have not organized themselves properly or not even organized themselves at all. When I ask them why, I keep hearing "Well, if an agent likes me I heard that he does it all for me, so I am just trying to find the right agent". I just want everyone trying to get started in this business to know that you will be making financial commitments on your end to get things started. Nobody is going to do it for you. If it was that easy, there would be many more success stories. Understand that you have to invest in yourself. You are your own product. Also, if you are just starting out in the business, you are in no position to be picky and choosy. You have entirely too much competition to afford to have that sort of attitude. For those who understand this, that is wonderful, and I wish you the best. For those that don't, I hope this helps put some reality in what you need to do and what you are responsible for. |
